Saving Files
The local computers C drive is a temporary storage only!
We do not recommend computer's hard drive (C drive) as a storage for files. If you use the computer's hard drive as a temporary storage, remember to copy all important files to at least one of the places listed below.
You can keep temporary copies of your files in the C drive e.g. when remoting. However, remember to make frequent backups in one of the places listed below.
Metropolia IT Services does not make backups of computers' hard drives. IT Services cannot guarantee that your files are safe in the hard drive.
Network drives
Network drives are located in Metropolia premises and they are managed by Metropolia alone.
Different Metropolia user groups (e.g. staff, students, partners) have different access permissions in folders in network drives.
Be aware of access rights
When saving files, make sure you know who gets access to the data. It is your responsibility to not share data to people who is not supposed to have access to it.
The following network drives and folders are available in Metropolia:
Label and folder | Purpose | Access rights |

(R=read access, RW=read and write access)
Publishing a home page or files in the public_html folder
Since the beginning of www, the Public_html folder offers the traditional means of publishing home pages are other public materials on the net. Make you files public for anyone on the net by copying them to the Z:\public_html folder.
What the address of a file copied to Z:\public_html looks like
https://users.metropolia.fi/~exampl/file.pdf
(exmpl = example user Eric Example's users ID, file.pdf = example file)
Do not post students' grades online
It is against the Metropolia information system's use policy and the general data protection regulation to publish course grades and other personal information via the public_html folder. Notice that all files placed in the public_html folder are accessible from the internet.
Z drive
Z drive is the user's home drive. Regular backups are made of it and it is meant as a storage for files that contain confidential information or personal information.
Quotas:
- students 5GB
- staff 5GB
Quotas can be increased for a justified reason. Please make a service request.
Sensitive materials server (metroarch)
A separate server is reserved for especially for storing and editing RDI projects' sensitive materials. Access rights to the materials on the server can granted to users working in the projects, both Metropolia users and external users.
More information can be found the sensitive materials' server's instructions page.
If sensitive materials are stored for Metropolia internal use and the project does not have external users as members, you can also store such materials in
U drive's priv folders. Notice! Make sure that only the users to whom the materials are meant can access the folders!
Z drive as your own home drive. Only you have access to your home drive unless you specifically give it's access rights to other users (we do not recommend this for Z is meant only for personal storage, and not for sharing files).
Cloud services
Microsoft and Google cloud services are available in Metropolia. They both have also cloud storage services. When using cloud storage services pay attention to cloud services usage rules: it is forbidden to store some materials in cloud services.
Cloud services offer also a good way to share files to several users at the same time. However, files saved in cloud services are not automatically backed up, so is advisable to make backups of your important cloud services files in an appropriate network drive.
External hard drive
An external hard drive can be used for backups. Before setting up an external hard drive, encrypt it with e.g. Bitlocker. Metropolia staff members can make a purchase request for an external hard drive, at https://hd.metropolia.fi > Report new case > IT purchase. The supervisor's permission is needed.
