Student's Moodle Guide

Student's Moodle Guide

This Moodle Guide is intended for users who have Student role in Moodle.

What is Moodle?

Moodle is an open-source online learning environment. At Metropolia, Moodle serves as the official digital learning platform. Moodle can be utilized in many ways as part of instruction, orientation, or other knowledge sharing. It may be used, for example, to support face-to-face teaching with a resource bank or as the sole learning environment for completely independent studying.

Each Moodle course site always has an owner, meaning a course site administrator. The administrator can be the responsibility teacher of the implementation or another Metropolia staff member, depending on the purpose of the course site. The course site's administrator's role is to act as the responsible person for student issues and content-related questions regarding the implementation.

You find Metropolia's Moodle at: moodle.metropolia.fi/

Activities and Materials

In Moodle, course sites contain various activities and materials.

Activity is a technical way to incorporate different tasks or functions into the course site that students can perform. An activity could be, for example, an instructional text, a scheduled quiz, a discussion forum for group work, or other practical tasks. Activities help the teacher organize course content and foster interaction with students.

Material refers to files or informational materials added to the course site. These can include PDF documents, videos, lecture slides, folders, links to external websites, or other files shared by the teacher with students.

Logging In

You can log in to Metropolia’s Moodle using three types of credentials:

  • Metropolia account: The primary login using your Metropolia credentials.
  • Haka login: Using credentials from another higher education institution.
  • Koulutustunnus: Moodle user account registration for external users.

Issues with logging in

If you experience issues with logging in, contact the Helpdesk by submitting a support request at: hd.metropolia.fi .

Logging in with Haka credentials

Students from other Finnish higher education institutions can log in to Metropolia's Moodle via Haka login.

Koulutustunnus (Moodle user account for external users)

In some cases, a separate Moodle account can be created for a external user if login via Metropolia credentials or Haka login is not possible. The account request is managed by Metropolia staff through a service request at: hd.metropolia.fi .

Koulutustunnus (user account for external users) is not a Metropolia account and only functions within Metropolia’s Moodle. The need for Koulutustunnus is always assessed individually, and accounts are created manually.

Once you have received instructions from your contact person regarding the activation of your user account, proceed as follows:

1) Go to https://koulutustunnus.metropolia.fi/

2) Fill in your first name, last name, email address and the course key you have received from your contact person. The email address will be registered as your username for Moodle.

3) Tick the “I’m not a robot” checkbox and press “Send activation request” button.

3) Check your email to complete the account activation. You should have received a message that contains further instructions to complete the registration process. Follow the activation link provided in the message to set a password for your username. Password can be reset in https://koulutustunnus.metropolia.fi/password

4) Go to https://moodle.metropolia.fi/login/. Choose “Local credentials” and login with your username (your email address) and password. Ask your contact person for further instructions for joining to the needed Moodle workspace.

Dashboard and Navigation

Dashboard

When you log into Moodle, you will be directed to the Dashboard, from which you can see:

  • Timeline – information about the schedules of ongoing courses
  • Recently accessed courses – a list of course sites you have visited recently
  • Calendar – upcoming teaching sessions, assignment deadlines, and exams displayed in a calendar view
  • Search feature – allows you to search for courses within Moodle

On the right side, clicking the gray arrow opens the Blocks panel, which shows upcoming events such as class sessions, assignment deadlines, and exam schedules.
You can customize the content of your Dashboard and Blocks by turning on Turn editing on from the top right corner.

Home Page

The Home Page contains general announcements and important updates.

My Courses

In the My Courses section, you will find all courses you are enrolled in as a participant. You can customize how the courses are displayed—either as cards, a list, or with course descriptions. You can search for courses using the search feature or filter courses based on various criteria:

  • You can choose to view all courses.
  • You can select to see only In Progress courses, Past courses, or Upcoming courses.
  • You can mark courses as favorites by using the three-dot menu for each course, which also allows you to filter and display only your favorite courses.
  • You can remove courses from your view and make them visible again by filtering out the removed courses. It’s recommended to remove courses from the view only after completing them or if there are too many courses cluttering the interface, to improve navigation.

Edit profile info

You can find your profile in the top right corner of the Moodle page (a round icon).
Click on your user profile to edit your profile information, including:

  • In Preferences, you can:
    • Change who can see your email address
    • Add or edit your contact information
    • Write an About me description
    • Upload a user picture, which will be visible next to your name in Moodle
  • By clicking on your user profile, you can also:
    • Choose your default language for Moodle
    • View your calendar, grades, and course completion information
    • Log out of Moodle

Message and Notification Settings

In your user profile, you can edit the following message and notification settings. These settings control, at a general level, how Moodle sends email notifications.

Forum Settings

  • Email digest method: This setting allows you to choose how Moodle sends copies of forum messages to your email.
  • Forum subscription: If automatic subscription to forums is enabled, you will be subscribed to the forum whenever you participate in it. You will receive copies of forum posts via email.
  • Forum tracking: If you turn tracking on, new posts in forums will be highlighted to you.

Message Settings

You can restrict who can send you messages via Moodle. You can also choose whether to receive copies of messages by email.

Notification Settings

You can specify whether you want to subscribe to activity notifications via email or get pop-up notifications in Moodle. You can also disable notifications entirely.
In notification settings, you can also customize the formatting used in emails (plain text or HTML). Additionally, you can set a different email address for notifications, separate from your login email.

Joining a Moodle Course Site

For some courses, students are automatically enrolled based on registration. These courses can be found in My Courses after logging in to Moodle. You can also search for courses by name using the search feature.

For other courses, a course key is required, which you can obtain from the instructor. The instructor may provide the URL of the course site, but you can also search for the course site by entering the course name, part of the name, or course code in the search function.

Once you find the correct course, add yourself to the course by entering the enrolment key in the designated field. After you have successfully enrolled using the enrolment key, the course will appear in My Courses for future access

How to find a course on Moodle

Check the enrolment instructions

  1. Check your Metropolia email inbox to see if you have been sent instructions on how to enrol in the course.
    • Log in to your email at mail.metropolia.fi.
    • Also check your spam folder and the "Other" tab if you can't find the message.
    • Also check your own institution (cross-institutional students) as well as your personal email inbox.
  2. Check the course's OMA workspace to see if there are instructions on how to enrol in the course.
    • Log in at https://opiskelija.oma.metropolia.fi/ → Show workspaces → Select your workspace → Check the workspace tabs (e.g. Announcements)
  3. If you can't find instructions on how to enrol in the places mentioned above, contact the course instructor and request the enrolment instructions.

Ask a classmate

  1. Log in to Moodle with your Metropolia username (short username, not email address) and password before accessing the course page.
  2. Make sure you have the correct course information.
    1. Follow the instructions you have received carefully again.
    2. Ask a classmate to show you how they access the course page and try to do the same.
  3. Check the Moodle homepage search to see if the course is not listed under "Future courses" or "Past courses." If the course's defined time period is not currently active, it will not appear in the active courses.

  4. Ask your teacher to add you to the course manually.

Issues with Haka login

If you do not see your courses when logging in via Haka, activate your Metropolia account here: Activate User Account . After activation, log in to Moodle with your Metropolia username.

Course visibility

Courses are originally created as hidden intentionally, so that the instructor has time to add content. The instructor must remember to change the course from hidden to visible once the content is ready.

  1. Ask your instructor to change the course visibility from hidden to visible.

How to access an activity or material

As a student, you can see the activities and materials that the instructor has made visible on the course site.

On a Moodle course, progression through activities and materials can be restricted using various visibility settings or conditions.

Conditions that may control the visibility or access to activities and resources include:

  • Visibility to students: The activity or resource may be available and visible to students, hidden/not accessible, or set to be available but not visible on the course page (findable via a link).
  • Group mode: The activity or resource is available only to a specific group.
  • Restricted access: Access may depend on completing another activity, reaching a certain date, achieving a particular grade, membership in a specific group, language setting, user profile data, or other restrictions.

If you encounter issues with visibility or progression, contact your instructor for assistance.

Completion progress

Completion progress bar offers a way to monitor your own course progress, including the completion of activities and resources. It helps visualize the structure of the course and the number of different tasks. The teacher defines the criteria for progress and the functionality may vary depending on the course site.

Completion progress tracking is often found on the right side of the course homepage.

Features of progress tracking include:

  • Overview: You can see your progress as a percentage, list, or bars. This allows you to quickly understand which activities and materials you have completed successfully, which tasks are still in progress, and what is upcoming. Hidden activities and resources do not appear in the progress overview.
  • Navigation: You can click on activities and resources to access them directly.
  • Mark as done: You can manually mark an activity or material as completed, which updates your progress.
  • Condition to open: An activity or resource is considered completed when you have opened and familiarized yourself with it (e.g., a PDF document).
  • Minimum number of attempts: The instructor may set a minimum number of times an activity must be completed.
  • Grade: Any grade that exceeds the passing threshold or any grade at all can be used to mark an activity as completed.

Note: Completion Progress tracking is visible only if the instructor has enabled it for the course and selected the activities to monitor. The instructor can update this progress throughout the course, and the information in the progress display may change accordingly.

Problems and Support Requests

For issues related to course content, schedules, and course completion, contact the responsible teacher of the course.

For technical problems, such as login issues or other technical difficulties, contact the Helpdesk by submitting a support request at hd.metropolia.fi/ .
