What Is the Digital Security Starter?
The Digital Security Starter (in Finnish Digiturvastartti DTS/DSS) is an online course designed to ensure the digital security of Metropolia’s students and staff. The course is short and practical, taking approximately 30–120 minutes to complete, depending on prior experience and level of competence.
The course is included in the studies of many new students, for example as an integrated part of the orientation courses of the new students. Anyone with an active Metropolia user account can complete the course.
Why Is the Course Important?
Digital security is an essential part of modern studies and everyday life. It forms the foundation for using services safely, protecting your own and others’ information, and preventing damage and misuse.
Completion of the course will be a prerequisite for the validity and continuation of user accounts in the future, because:
- Legislation requires organizations to provide information security and data protection training and guidance, for example the Act on Information Management in Public Administration (Section 4, subsection 2) and the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR (Articles 29 and 32(4)).
- Instructions and training must be available online regardless of time.
- The course communicates the most essential aspects of data processing, compliance, and how to act in digital security incidents.
Background of the Course and Ordering the Course for Yourself
The Digital Security Starter has been developed as part of the Development of Cybersecurity Education and Related Collaboration in Higher Education Institutions project. The course is based on cybersecurity competence descriptions produced in the project and on Tampere University’s information security and data protection course. The course is also available for use by other higher education institutions and organizations.
