What should I do if my work laptop is malfunctioning?

This response contains information only applicable to Metropolia employees, not students.
Age of device
Check the age of your laptop if you don't know it yet.
For Dell devices: Tuki | Dell Suomi. Enter the service tag or express service code located on the bottom of your machine into the search field.
For HP devices: Virallisen HP®:n takuun tarkistus - Suomi | HP®:n tuki. Enter the serial number of your machine into the search field.
If your work computer is malfunctioning, it's advisable to first try updating the latest drivers. This can help with issues such as overheating problems and unusually loud or uneven fan noise.
What should I do if the device is accidentally broken?
If the device has reached the end of its lifecycle (e.g., laptops after 4 years and mobile phones after 3 years), IT Services will cover the cost of a new device due to the lifecycle ending.
If the device is younger, discuss the replacement with your supervisor. IT Services does not cover accidentally damaged devices. If your supervisor does not allow the cost to be billed to your department, the cost will be billed to you. Employees are responsible for the employer's devices in their possession.
Once you have agreed on the costs with your supervisor, submit a procurement request for a new device (or alternatively, for repair) using the form available at https://hankintalomake.metropolia.fi.
What should I do if my laptop is less than four years old?
- Please submit a service request at https://hd.metropolia.fi.
- Include the following information in the service request:
- Laptop name
- Age of the laptop
- Description of the issue
- Any other relevant details for a well-written service request
- Indicate in the request if you need a loan laptop during the repair period.
- Submit the service request.
- Once you receive confirmation, take the damaged laptop to the helpdesk:
- Make a backup of your files, for example, to a Z-drive.
- Attach a note to the laptop with your name, the service request number, and the word "Helpdesk".
- Take the laptop to the campus service desk. The Helpdesk will collect it for repair.
If you mentioned needing a loan laptop, the Helpdesk will deliver it to the service desk for you to pick up and inform you accordingly.
What should I do if my laptop is over four years old?
Your computer has reached the end of its useful life. Information technology services will provide a new standardized model to each full-time staff member. Alternative features will be the responsibility of the user's cost center.
Please make a service request and procurement request following the instructions below:
- Make a service request at https://hd.metropolia.fi
- Include your computer's information in the service request.
- Laptop name
- Age of the laptop
- Description of the issue
- Any other relevant details for a well-written service request
- Indicate in the request if you need a loan laptop during the repair period.
- Submit the service request.
When you have received confirmation: - Deliver the broken laptop to the helpdesk.
- Make a backup of your files, for example, to a Z-drive.
- Attach a note to the laptop with your name, the service request number, and the word "Helpdesk".
- Take the laptop to the campus service desk. The Helpdesk will collect it for repair.

What should I do if the computer has a battery problem?
- Open the Dell Power Management program (only applicable to Dell computers).
- Take a full-screen screenshot of the section displaying the battery status, specifically the Battery Health.
- Make a service request at https://hd.metropolia.fi.
- Include your computer's information in the service request.
- Laptop name
- Age of the laptop
- How does the battery issue manifest?
- Include other relevant details in the well-crafted service request.
- Attach the screenshot you took.
- Submit the service request.
- Wait for the helpdesk to contact you.
