Moodle is an open-source online learning environment that originated from Martin Dougiamas's doctoral dissertation and whose development involves a global community. Dougiamas's background includes long-term work in WebCT system development and educational science studies in addition to his engineering studies. Moodle's learning theoretical foundation is based on four pedagogical approaches: constructivism, constructionism, social constructivism, and the sharing of expertise.
Moodle is suitable for supporting face-to-face teaching, as a learning environment for online courses, and as a network platform for blended learning. The duration and tools used in a Moodle course can be freely defined, and the course is not tied to learning materials or a study module. Moodle is an excellent platform for project-based learning that transcends study module boundaries. The teacher is the administrator of the course and can, if desired, define the course settings, the rights of participants, and the openness of the course.
