Skanska ja ABB ovat SmartLabin kehittäjiä ja ylläpitäjiä. SmartLab toimii samalla alustana ja koekenttänä Metropolian innovaatioprojekteissa ja opinnäytetöissä. Rakennustyöt on tehty Stadin ammatti- ja aikuisopiston rakennusalan ja talotekniikan opiskelijatyönä. SmartLab-tilaa hyödynnetään palvelumuotoilun keinoin sekä teknisten ratkaisujen että käyttöliittymien kehittämiseen. SmartLabissa testataan ja kehitetään teknologioita, rajapintoja ja käytäntöjä, joiden avulla voidaan kehittää asumista palvelevia käyttäjäystävällisiä ratkaisuja. Ratkaisujen on tarkoitus soveltua elämänkaaren eri vaiheisiin. Laajemmin tavoitteena on tulosten hyödyntäminen uuden sukupolven järjestelmien ja asuntojen suunnittelussa sekä ratkaisujen skaalaus asuntosuunnitteluun. ”Kehittäminen on entistä nopeatahtisempaa. Meillä pitää olla valmius ketterään kokeilukulttuuriin ja verkottumiseen. SmartLab kytkee Skanskan ja ABB:n vahvan kehitystoiminnan ja resurssit yhteen Metropolian kanssa, jolloin opetus ja yritysten käytännön työ limittyvät tiiviisti keskenään. Opiskelijoille tarjoutuu ainutlaatuinen mahdollisuus tutustua yritysten kehitystoimintaan käytännössä”, sanoo johtaja Jan Elfving Skanskalta.
