A lot of useful apps are available in App Store, including Lync, VMware View, Skype, and Dropbox.
To install non-free apps you need a credit card for paying. Discuss with your degree program colleagues about payment policy if apps are bought for instruction supporting work.
Open App Store by tapping the icon in the Home screen:
You can install free apps without credit card information.
In what follows, we will install Microsoft Lync 2013. Type "lync" in the search field in the upper right corner and tap on lync 2013 for ipad in the results:
In the following preview tap on the FREE button and then on INSTALL:

The preview of a non-free app shows the price. To start the installation tap the price button:
You will be asked to sign in to iTunes Store:
Fore security reasons, you are asked your Apple ID security questions. Hopefully you remember your answers:
You must also verify your payment information. You may have credit on your Apple ID account or perhaps you will be using a credit card. If your information is correct tap Done:
The installation begins. Once the app is installed, an OPEN button will appear in the preview. Tap on it to open your new app:
