Preliminaries

Before downloading Office 365 Apps, the student or the staff member must accept Metropolia Cloud Service Terms. Signing in to the download site is possible approximately 2 hours after accepting the cloud services terms.

How do I download Office to a Windows device?

Sign in to the download site:
https://login.microsoftonline.com/

Log in as username@metropolia.fi (username, not email address)

When you put the cursor in the password field, you will be automatically directed to a Metropolia server.

The user name field is already filled out. Enter you password and click on Sign in.

Choose Install Office > Other install options

Select Language and Version (64-bit or 32-bit)

Next, click on the Install Office button and a popup windows opens:

Click on Save File (then choose the save location).

Double-click on the file you just downloaded to begin the Office installation. The size of the download package is about 800mb.

IMPORTANT WARNING!!!

During the installation or logging in to Microsoft Office 365, the computer asks you to Allow organization to manage your computer. Do NOT allow it. The checkbox must be unchecked! If you leave it checked, it can harm the functions in your computers in many ways!

Points to note when downloading and installing to Mac devices

IMPORTANT! Microsoftin Office for Mac is (still) in version 2011, newer Office for Mac "365" is to be released after summer in 2015, as told by Microsoft.

Outlook (2011)-application included with Office-installer is an older version than the newer Outlook for Mac (365) which is available as a separate download.

Latest Outlook for Mac is available for download from the same website as other Microsoft Office 365 products.

Both Outlook versions can be used on the same computer at the same time.

However, Microsoft recommends that the older Outlook (yellow O-icon) should be removed and new Outlook for Mac (blue icon with O and envelope) should be used instead.

Older Outlook 2011 is usually in location /ApplicationsMicrosoft Office 2011/Outlook(.app)

It can be removed by dragging it into the Trash and emptying the Trash.

How do I download Office to iOS and Android devices?

iOS:

For Apple iOS-devices (iPad and iPhone) Office applications can be downloaded from Apple's App Store.

App Store requires a personal AppleID which is not the same as your Metropolia ID. AppleID is created and managed personally by user.

Android:

Word, Excel, and Powerpoint apps for Android are available in Google Play app store.

Android apps do not necessarily run on older tablets because they require Android 4.4 KitKat operating system version. Other requirements are 7 inch display, 1GB of memory, and the ARM processor.

Is Office available for Ubuntu?

Unfortunately, it's not available for Ubuntu.

Startup errors

The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing

Visual C++ 2015 libraries are not installed, install them from link below

You can install both packages on a 64-bit machine.

Activation problems

Check that the machine clock is on time.

Note: product key

If the installation asks you to write the product key do this: Make a choice of "continuing contract" and then login with your metropoliausername@metropolia.fi and your metropolia account password. Then Office will open.

General

Office licensing:

The user must connect to the internet every 30 days. Microsoft checks whether activation is permitted.

“As part of the installation process, Office 365 Apps communicates with the Office Licensing Service and the Activation and Validation Service to obtain and activate a product key. Each day, or each time the user logs on to their computer, the computer connects to the Activation and Validation Service to verify the license status and extend the product key. As long as the computer can connect to the Internet at least once every 30 days, Office remains fully functional. If the computer goes offline for more than 30 days, Office enters reduced functionality mode until the next time a connection can be made. To get Office fully functional again, usually a user can simply connect to the Internet and let the Activation and Validation Service reactivate the installation.”
